Introduction Letter

Hello! Welcome to my portfolio for English 110, Freshman Composition.

Explore and analyze, in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations.

Much of my time for this class was spent understanding and analyzing the variety of genres that exist within writing and the rhetorical themes / situations that support them. For my source-based paper in particular, this class gave me a better understanding of how to effectively utilize and analyze genres, and the importance of doing so; having the proper genre and rhetorical themes within one’s piece is vital for developing a certain mood or feeling for the reader. For a formal piece for instance, it is important to understand what vocabulary is appropriate for such; the same applies for informal pieces, and any other piece of work that is meant for a certain audience.

Going more in-depth on my source-based rhetorical analysis paper, I was required to understand the rhetorical differences between an opinionated piece and one of academic objectivity, while understanding the space that exists within the middle; writing is a fluid, nuanced process, and it is impossible to accurate categorize all forms of writing and pieces of work neatly within forms of rhetoric and genres. Through having a strong grasp on examples and instances types of rhetoric have been used, for what, and in what way, however, it becomes easier to differentiate and understand this nuance within one’s own writing.

Locate research sources (including academic journal articles, magazine and newspaper articles) in the library’s databases or archives and on the Internet and evaluate them for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias.

Understanding the databases for CCNY this semester was vital for me to have an easier time producing works of writing for my future time here. This class provided me the ability to understand how academiconefile works, which allowed me to find other databases and/or JSTOR for my work in this class in particular, which is shown through my inquiry based paper.

Practice systematic application of citation conventions.

Something that was surprisingly important to me this semester was getting a stronger grasp of MLA, APA and Chicago formatting. Although I only used MLA formatting for all three of my projects, I took the opportunity after my sourced based work to fully understand the MLA process and how it is different from its APA and Chicago counterparts. From this class, I now hold an ability to cite within MLA format without a guide/generator, while also having a greater understanding of APA and Chicago methodologies as well. Through having a stronger understanding of proper works cited, bibliography, in-line citation and footnote conventions, I can now use this gained information for future classes.
